E3 2006
Posted on: 05.15.2006
Meh… I have to say that this year I was not impressed by any of the conferences and I didn’t walk away with that “can’t wait” feeling at all.
All of the newly announced games do not interest me one bit. I still can’t believe that companies can make a simple little cut scene and call it “real time” and all the mindless sheep in the audience go crazy. Are you serious? It was a cut scene!!! Who cares!!! Show me actual game play footage and then maybe I’ll get a little excited. Let me play the game and then it’ll be worth my praise. The sad thing is that companies will continue to create these lavish cut scenes because there are so many fanboys that drool over them.

XBOX 360
Were there any decent game showings? I didn’t see any. I got a little excited when I heard about Fable 2 but then I saw the “trailer”. 100% CG and it didn’t show anything interesting. Booorring. Halo 3… please, see the rant in the previous paragraph. That was it? Another horrible showing by M$. Dang… I really want them to show/offer something that makes me want a 360.

PS3
Yikes! $500 for the gimp and $600 for the premium with no game? Wow! Developers are going to have a hard time trying to justify spending all of their time and money on PS3 games when the majority of the planet won’t be able to afford the hardware to play them on. Hopefully Sony wakes up and realizes that offering 2 hardware choices is stupid to begin with and that taking a large loss on the system will eventually make them more money. This could be the beginning of the end for SCE.

Wii
Zzzzzzzz zzzzzz zzzzz. So I can play Zelda: TP with the one button wand huh? Woopidy doooo! So, the shell controller isn’t really a shell and it still won’t be able to play all N64 games because of the missing C-buttons (no, the c-stick/analog stick will NOT be able to emulate games that need you to press more than one C-button at a time)? Nice. So I’m going to have to place this monstrous wired strip in front of my TV in order to play your games? What if my TV is mounted on the wall? What if I don’t directly face/point at the TV when I’m playing games like most gamers do when they are sitting on their couch? Oh, no journalist thought these were decent enough questions to ask? So they were all fanboys too. Too bad.
Not that this E3 was all that bad… I just wasn’t impressed. Nothing was shown by any of the presenters that wasn’t already known or inevitable. It was just… mediocre. Well, maybe next year…
